Louisiana's healthcare system reflects the state's unique cultural heritage and complex social landscape. The state is home to two major academic medical centers: LSU Health New Orleans and Tulane University School of Medicine, both located in New Orleans. University Medical Center New Orleans (UMC) is the state's flagship public hospital and a Level I Trauma Center, rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina and opened in 2015. Ochsner Health, headquartered in New Orleans, is the state's largest private health system, operating hospitals and clinics across Louisiana and the Gulf South.

Louisiana faces some of the most severe health disparities in the nation, with high rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The state has the highest rate of obesity-related illness in the country and significant racial health disparities. The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) (ldh.la.gov) oversees public health programs, Medicaid (called Medicaid Louisiana), and healthcare facility licensing.

Louisiana expanded Medicaid in 2016, extending coverage to approximately 500,000 low-income adults. The Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (lsbme.la.gov) licenses physicians and provides online verification. The state has also made significant investments in behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment in response to the opioid epidemic.
