Michigan's healthcare system is anchored by two world-class academic medical centers and a network of regional hospitals serving a diverse population of approximately 10 million residents. The University of Michigan Health System (Michigan Medicine) in Ann Arbor is consistently ranked among the top hospitals in the nation and is a major center for cancer care, cardiac surgery, neurology, and pediatrics. Henry Ford Health System in Detroit is one of the largest integrated health systems in the country, operating Henry Ford Hospital — a Level I Trauma Center and major academic medical center. Beaumont Health (now part of Corewell Health) and Spectrum Health (also Corewell Health) are other major systems serving southeast and west Michigan respectively.

Michigan faces significant health disparities, particularly in Detroit and other urban areas, where rates of chronic disease, infant mortality, and mental health conditions exceed state and national averages. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) (michigan.gov/mdhhs) oversees Medicaid (called Healthy Michigan Plan), public health programs, and behavioral health services.
