Healthcare in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico's healthcare system serves approximately 3.2 million residents on the island and faces unique challenges as a U.S. territory. The island's healthcare infrastructure was significantly damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017, which destroyed or severely damaged hundreds of healthcare facilities and led to a major exodus of healthcare professionals. Recovery efforts have been ongoing, supported by federal funding and rebuilding programs.

San Juan, the capital, is home to the island's major medical institutions, including Centro Médico de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico Medical Center) — the largest hospital complex in the Caribbean — which includes the University Hospital (Hospital Universitario), Puerto Rico Children's Hospital, and several specialty centers. The University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine trains the majority of Puerto Rico's physicians. Hospital Auxilio Mutuo and Hospital San Jorge are major private hospitals in San Juan.

Puerto Rico participates in Medicaid and CHIP under a block grant arrangement (rather than the open-ended federal matching formula used by states), which has historically resulted in significantly lower federal funding per enrollee. The Puerto Rico Department of Health (PRDOH) (salud.pr.gov) oversees public health programs. The Puerto Rico Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline handles physician licensing on the island.
